[CELEB] Kim Ji-won back on small screen as sibling in 'My Liberation Notes'
Actor Kim Ji-won returned to the small screen through the new JTBC drama "My Liberation Notes" on Saturday.
"My Liberation Notes" is a coming-of-age drama about three siblings' journey to finding happiness as they try to escape their monotonous lives in search of fulfillment, love and freedom.
Kim plays the role of Yeom Ki-jung, the youngest of the three siblings.
At the drama series' online press conference on Friday, Kim described her character as someone with a "colorless life who does not easily get along with other people and often goes unnoticed even by her family." Though seemingly an unremarkable character, Kim said that she felt inclined to play Yeom because she "contemplates the emotions that most people don't care to think about and has her own thoughts."
Other actors in the drama are Lee El, who portrays the eldest sibling, and Lee Min-ki, the second eldest.
The writer of "My Liberation Notes" is Park Hae-young. She is best known for having penned "My Mister" (2018) and "Another Miss Oh" (2016). Kim Seok-yoon, director of "My Liberation Notes" is best known for directing the JTBC drama "The Light in Your Eyes" (2019).
Kim Ji-won worked with director Kim in 2018 for the comedy-crime film "Detective K: Secret of the Bloodsucking Demon."
The first episode of "My Liberation Notes" saw the three siblings living on a farm in a small village in Suwon, Gyeonggi. About an hour-and-a-half subway ride away from Seoul, the three pondered whether their lives would have been better if they had lived in Seoul.
The drama recorded a local viewership rating of 2.9 percent after the first episode, according to Nielsen Korea. The previous JTBC rom-com "Forecasting Love and Weather" which ended April 3, had recorded 7.3 percent during the same time slot.
"My Liberation Notes" airs every Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 p.m. on JTBC and streaming platforms. It is set to be a 16-part series.
After debuting as an actor in 2011 through the comedy series "High Kick: Revenge of the Short Legged," Kim, now 29, began to receive public attention for her supporting role in the series "The Inheritors" in 2013. For her performance, she received the New Star Awards at the 2013 SBS Drama Awards.
Kim went on to star in the hit drama series "Descendants of the Sun" in 2016. For her performance as a supporting actor, she received three awards — The Rising Star Award, Best Couple Award and the Excellence Award for female actors in mini-series — at the 2016 KBS Drama Awards.
One year later, she took on her first lead role in KBS's rom-com series "Fight for My Way" (2017). Acting alongside actor Park Seo-joon, Kim portrayed a receptionist aspiring to be a newscaster. Marking local viewership ratings of 13.8 percent according to Nielson Korea, the drama was hugely successful. For the role, Kim also received the Netizen Award at the 2017 KBS Drama Awards. The Netizen Award is awarded based on votes made through KBS's website.
