NewJeans is a five-member girl group that debuted in August 2022 with EP "New Jeans" under ADOR, a newly-founded music label under HYBE
The band was put together by Min Hee-jin, best known for having been the creative director of SM Entertainment from 2002 to 2019, taking the helm on visual aspects like music videos or album art for big-name K-pop acts Girls' Generation, SHINee, f(x), EXO, Red Velvet and NCT.
Min, speaking on the meaning of the band's name, said, "People never get tired of wearing jeans, and we hope that the group will become a new icon in this era. It also has the goal of becoming 'new genes'".
The group has been one of the most popular groups in 2022 with its so-called "Y2K" theme, or the vibe and culture between the late 1990s and early 2000s. NewJeans climbed up the charts on multiple streaming platforms worldwide with its debut EP and its first single album, "OMG," which followed in January.
Along with a positive response, the group has also received criticism regarding its dresses and concept that overly emphasizes the girls' young age while mixing it with borderline sexual images.
