BabyMonster's debut EP breaks girl group sales record
Rookie girl group BabyMonster's EP, “BABYMONS7ER,” has achieved the highest weekly sales for a debut album or EP by a girl group, surpassing the record set by fellow newcomer ILLIT in March.
A total of 401,287 copies of the EP were sold in the week of April 1 to 7, according to music industry tracker Hanteo Chart on Monday.
This broke the record set by ILLIT, who had sold 380,056 copies of the group’s debut EP, “Super Real Me,” in the week from March 25 to 31.
BabyMonster’s first EP, “BABYMONS7ER,” marks the collective debut of the seven-member group to include returning member Ahyeon, who rejoined in April. The EP was released on April 1, 126 days after the group made its "first debut" with six members with the digital single, “Batter Up,” in November last year.
The EP consists of seven songs, including the lead track “Sheesh,” B-side track “Like That” produced by American singer-songwriter Charlie Puth and “Dream.” It also has rerecorded versions of the two digital singles “Batter Up” and “Stuck in the Middle” that includes Ahyeon’s vocals.
“Sheesh” debuted on the Spotify’s global chart of daily top songs at No. 69. The track’s music video was YouTube’s most watched video in 24 hours on April 7, and topped YouTube’s global weekly music video ranking based on views for the period from March 29 to April 4.
BabyMonster will hold fan meet and greets in Tokyo, Jakarta, Singapore, Taipei and Bangkok as part of its first "See You There" fan concert tour. The group is also slated to perform at Japan’s Summer Sonic music festival in August.
